A Lesson in Launching a Product: Flamin’ Hot 101

How Hispanic Heritage Inspired One of America’s Hottest Product Launches

National Hispanic Heritage Month is a celebration of the histories, cultures, and contributions of Hispanic and Latin Americans in the United States, running from September 15 to October 15. Not only is this time of year a period of celebration, but it is also meant to recognize the influence of Hispanic communities on the nation’s development, particularly in areas like art, culture, politics, and industry.

From prominent artists like Bad Bunny, to trending foods like Birria tacos, the Hispanic community has contributed more to our lives than many people may notice. A story I think of around this time is how one of America’s favorite snacks, Flamin’ Hot Cheetos, came to be discovered.

From Janitor to Marketing Visionary: The Flamin’ Hot Origin Story

A great way to learn about how this product came to be is by watching the movie, Flamin’ Hot. In the film, we learn the story of Richard Montañez, a janitor at Frito-Lay. The film follows Montañez’s rise from humble beginnings as the son of Mexican immigrants to becoming a key player in the snack industry.

Montañez grew up facing adversity and struggling to find who he was. He even found himself at a point in life where the only way he could stay afloat was through selling drugs, and often running from the police. Montañez, through the support of his wife, learned that he was worth more, and ultimately his family deserved more. After passing around multiple resumes, he eventually found someone who was willing to take a chance on him, landing him at Frito-Lay.

While working as a janitor at the Frito-Lay factory, he becomes inspired to create a new product that appealed to his friends and family. The snack choices available at the time weren’t enticing. Fritos, Cool Ranch Doritos? No thank you. Where was a snack that incorporates the bold, spicy flavors of Mexican cuisine that made their taste buds burn (in a good way of course)! After multiple tastings, and samplings a spicy Cheetos sample was born. Despite having no formal business background, Montañez worked tirelessly to promote his idea, eventually catching the attention of corporate executives. Following pitches, and the need to believe in himself and his product, Flamin’ Hot Cheetos came to be.

Throughout the film, we see Montañez show his determination, pride for his culture, and the power of innovation. Montañez had passion and grit which helped him break through barriers in both his personal and professional life which not only allowed him to launch a new product into an already saturated market but also changed the course of snacks in the future. At the end of the movie, the CEO of Frito-Lay, Roger Enrico, meets Montanez while he’s cleaning the halls. Enrico tells him the value he sees in him, and that he wants to learn more about the vision he has for marketing to the Hispanic community. In that moment, Montañez goes from being a janitor, to the Frito-Lay Director of Multicultural Marketing.

Flamin Hot is a heartwarming story of what passion and hard work can get you. More importantly, it highlights the importance of diversity in the business world and the impact of Hispanic culture on American products today.
