Walmart
A Warm, Well-Crafted Welcome.
Walmart asked for innovation. We delivered.

Client Challenge
The world’s top retailer wanted to get even better by helping customers find things faster. The ask? Create a powerful new interactive platform to improve wayfinding, promote additional purchases, and introduce a new advertising revenue stream.
Planit's Solution
We designed a soup-to-nuts interactive platform dubbed “The Welcome Center,” greeting folks at the store entrance and smoothing out their shopping journey. From the touch-screen platform through to information architecture, UI/UX, and web design, Planit built all of it.
UI Design: Highlight the Highlights
Designing the interface for different sections of the store came down to one thing: fresh relevance. We created modules that were flexible, easy to follow, and splashy. Whether promoting fruits and vegetables or gameday essentials, we made it fun for the shopper to see compelling stuff…and get to it easily.

Interactive Gamification: Fun & Function
Planit designed advertising opportunities for Walmart partner brands to showcase products at the point of sale. Starbucks’ Find Your Roast, Mucinex’s whack-a-mole-style Crush Sick, and Windex’s Clean the Screen games boosted awareness and product education.

Advanced Technology: Measuring Happiness
We also equipped The Welcome Center with anonymous facial recognition that provided important customer sentiment reporting, delivering valuable insights on Walmart’s goal of improving the in-store experience.

UI Experience: Get Them There Faster
Wayfinding was central to the UI design. The interactive entrypoint for customers was the customizable sidebar navigation, anchored by search and wayfinding functionality, and complemented with customer service and discovery opportunities.

Store Navigation: Simplifying the Search
Once on the wayfinding path, customers could easily type in the product they were looking for, with the bonus of a time-saving auto-fill feature. After selecting a product, a map showing the shortest route to their desired product would pop up.

Advertising Platform: Sparking New Interest
Planit created a built-in ad program to spark purchase impulses. As users navigated through the experience, custom content like dinner recipes, cleaning tips, and seasonal promos (think allergy medicine at the start of spring) appeared on-screen. Each content zone could be touched to start a new experience guiding customers to the advertised products.
